CBD vs. THC

CBD is short for Cannabidiol, and THC is short for Tetrahydrocannabinol. They are both derived from plants from the Cannabaceae family. However, CBD is typically extracted from the hemp plant belonging to this family that contains less the 0.3% of THC.

Both substances bind with receptors in your body’s endocannabinoid system that helps regulate several processes in our bodies including appetite, mood, sleep, memory, and pain, among others. The main difference lies in the fact that THC makes you feel ‘high’ while CBD does not.

Choosing The Right CBD Product

Thankfully, CBD is legal in Canada which is a big reason why you can find it as CBD oil, tincture, capsules, gummies, creams and more. You may also see terms like full-spectrum and CBD isolate. You can read about the differences between them here.

The type of product you choose can depend on when you want to take it, for what condition, and your lifestyle.

CBD oils and tinctures are easy to leave by your bedside and take in the mornings and/or evenings while capsules and gummies are discreet and easy to carry around for a CBD dose while you’re on the go.

Chart:

The right CBD oil dosage is highly individual. It can depend on how your body’s cannabinoid receptors bind to CBD, your metabolism, your body weight, and the severity of your symptoms. It also depends on the concentration of CBD in the product you are using. As a general rule of thumb though, most people take a dosage of about 20 – 40 mg of CBD a day.

Calculating Your Dose:

At Vitalita, our CBD products are clearly marked with their concentration as well as the dosage per 1ml. For example, you can find the CBD Isolate Tincture in strengths of 1500 mg, 2250 mg, and 3000 mg. The bottles are also clearly marked with the doses you get per 1 ml serving – 1ml of the lowest potency is 50 mg per ml. Simply divide this by 20 to understand how many drops you need. In this case, 1 drop of tincture is 2.5mg of CBD (50/20 = 2.5), so 4 or 5 drops under your tongue will give you 12-13 mg of CBD.

You may need to take even less of a full spectrum product than a CBD isolate.

Our CBD gummies and capsules contain 25mg CBD or 50 mg per gummy or capsule making them really easy to pop during a busy day.

Starting Off:

If you are completely new to CBD, we recommend you start with CBD oil or tincture as it is really easy to control the dose. Start with the lowest concentration and a mild dose – in fact you can even take a milder than recommended dose and increase it slowly until you achieve the desired effect. Many people also take milder doses of CBD in the mornings for its anxiety and stress relieving effects and slightly stronger ones at night to combat insomnia and promote a healthy night’s sleep.

It can take a while for capsules and gummies to be absorbed by the body. If you are trying them out for the first time, give it 3 – 4 hours to feel the effects before increasing the dose.

Safety and Side Effects:

The World Health Organization states that ‘CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile.’ CBD overdoses are unheard of nor is it addictive. In fact, an article in Nature reports that a study that found the CBD may even have the potential to reduce cravings for other addictive substances. The amount of CBD a person can tolerate varies from individual to individual along with the condition they are treating. One study found that for chronic conditions, people could tolerate doses as high as 1,500 mg of CBD a day! Side effects are rare but typically include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Increased or Reduced Appetite
  • Upset stomach

If you feel any of these symptoms, don’t worry – simply reduce your CBD dosage until you feel comfortable. If you are taking any other medication, always consult your doctor.

CBD for Pets:

CBD offers your pets plenty of benefits too. Our pet tincture comes in concentrations of 750mg and 1500 mg. Just as with you, we recommend starting with a low CBD dosage for your dog and increasing it slowly. We recommend 1mg per kilogram of body weight for your furry friend. Simply calculate how many drops of CBD tincture your pooch needs and repeat the dosage twice a day or every six hours as needed.

Remember if you’re ever in doubt – always consult a vet!
